The Tiny House movement has been of interest to me since I started college in 2012. I was personally invited by one of my design professors to be a part of his Scholar Citizen Class: Building a Tiny House. The class allowed me to research Tiny House living and the social, economic, and political issues that have been brought to attention from the movement. It also provided me with the knowledge of building homes first hand. It was one of the best classes I have ever taken throughout my college career, and I am really happy that I got to further my experience with Wishbone Tiny Homes this summer.
The first week on the job was a blast! Teal built me the most amazing custom desk that I have ever seen. I mean look at that cool purple design on the top of it! It’s my size too. I couldn’t have asked for a better workspace. I also got to shadow Gerry, who showed me the design process at Wishbone. Very quickly, I learned that being detail oriented is one of the most important things when it comes to designing tiny homes. The great thing about Wishbone is that every single house is custom made, so a new challenge arises every time I design a new one.

I was also able to attend a zoning and planning meeting at city hall. It was a great experience to see how the tiny house movement has taken off in Asheville. I learned that Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are very popular in the city and that they can eliminate a lot of affordable housing issues in the city. It was really nice to see a community of tiny house supporters coming out and stating their opinions about the benefits of tiny homes.
On June 18th, I went on adventure with Teal and Lily to Brevard, where there was a Tiny House Rally hosted by United Way. I got to meet other Tiny House companies and see what they were designing. It was really nice to see that all these companies were supporting each other in their endeavors to market this movement. We also had some interested customers come over and ask some questions about tiny homes.
In the short time that I was here, I learned so much more than I ever thought I would. Teal and Gerry took me under their wings and really let me explore the tiny house movement in a unique way. I am so excited that I will be able to continue my experience with them while I am in school as well. I am so honored to be a part of the Wishbone Family!
